Specialties:Co-Founder and Chairman of a boutique search firm. My practice specialty is the provider segment -- health systems, hospitals, disease management firms, hospice and home care, EMS, physician group practice, healthcare technology and emerging businesses etc. I have extensive experience working with highly politicized and unionized organizations. I frequently speak on career management, interviewing skills and improving organizational performance through better recruiting practices.
My Interests
Visit my blog at HealthCare Voice for insights into my interests. http://healthcarevoice.typepad.com/healthcare_voice/

In addition to a very busy search practice that keeps me traveling from Hawaii to Abu Dhabi and beyond, I write and speak on leadership, talent acquisition as well as career/personal brand management. Although I work primarily in healthcare executive search on an international basis, my interests cross multiple industry segments.

I enjoy networking with entrepreneurs because I feel this is where innovation occurs. My firm is known for its use of video interviews and a candidate screening process that allows us to offer one of the longest and best placement guarantees in the search industry. It doesn’t hurt that I am a former crime writer and investigative reporter for a major Texas newspaper!

The real joy in executive search is finding that exceptional candidate and then being accountable to the client for his or her success in terms of tenure and performance.

Five Recommendations To Integrate Onboarding, Recruiting

Companies must disclose, not withhold information from candidates during the recruiting process.

You cannot operate a successful onboarding program without fully integrating recruitment. A great onboarding program cannot be optimally effective if new employees – executives, department managers, supervisors and line employees – don’t fully understand and support the organization’s mission, its values, corporate cultural and performance expectations – prior to employment.

Baby Boomers Join Club 2030

DALLAS, Texas (March 31, 2009) -- As unemployment numbers continue their worrisome climb, and as the stock market moves erratically up and down with so many retirement plans hanging in the balance, I have been thinking lately about the much anticipated shift in the workforce -- as Baby Boomers retire they will be replaced by eager Gen-Xers. For years workforce gurus and insurance actuarial analysts have been proclaiming the arrival of this moment in time. Now that the time has finally arr… Continue

Come Out of the Closet

... people who become obsessed with the daily data dump of increasingly bad economic news, are more likely to make mistakes in critical business situations.

This is not the time to hide in the closet. There will be big winners and some spectacular losers in these tumultuous times. You can let the bad news set your strategy or you can plot a course to take advantage of new opportunities that will certainly present themselves while everyone else is watching the doom and gloom on the 24/7 cable ne… Continue

A Hospital CEO's Tough Lesson Learned

Dallas, Texas (November 16, 2008) -- The great thing about my job is that I get to meet and talk with a wide range of current and former health system and hospital executives.

Most of the time these encounters occur at ACHE events or other conferences. Occasionally they are chance meetings in hotel lobbies or airports. I am struck by how often these serendipitous encounters occur even though our industry is modest in size. However, in the interest of fairness and full disclosure, I have… Continue

Well, congratulations. Unfortunately I think social media sites, including Twitter, are becoming the preferred platform for direct marketing pitches and scams. And that is one reason I have not been posting over here -- I am trying to limit my exposure.

I travel almost every week. I may be in Chicago Tuesday and Wednesday next week, and then I leave for the Middle East on Friday. If I do not go to Chicago, then one of those two days might work. Check with me tomorrow.

Hi John,

Thanks for your email. I am trying to schedule a meeting with Paula to discuss how branding can play a part in the healthcare industry. Sounds like you guys know each other pretty well.

I'd love to meet with you as well to get to know you better and network a little with you. I'm trying to drive some new business for my company and wanting to connect with more people in the D/FW area. Any chance we could meet up with each other in the next week or so to get acquainted?

Let me know.

Overseas work requires a good reputation and a little luck. We were lucky but one could argue that luck comes to those who do not depend on it. We are 14 years into this business so this overseas opportunity was not immediate. It was the result of constant networking – exploring relationships that did not materialize, talking to friends of friends, etc.

The key to finding business, I think, is to focus on a target market and then provide a quality and level of service that uniquely distinguishes you from your competitors. There are a lot of branding firms in the market. What makes you uniquely different? Why would I want to hire you?

JohnMarch is a retained search consultancy. We focus primarily on high-end executives. Our value-added proposition is built around accountability and service. We offer a 36-month placement guarantee at the c-suite. If clients are not satisfied with our recommended panel, we reduce our fee. My own story – I am the only executive recruiter in any sector – that was a former crime writer and investigative reporter. I led the start-up of Hermann Hospital’s Life Flight program in Houston, the second such program in the country. I set up 14 or so other programs as the national marketing manager for Rocky Mountain Helicopters, the leading service provider at the time. While my value proposition is important, while my story is interesting, I spend a lot of time strengthening our corporate brand by building my personal image – leveraging my story - as a thought leader in healthcare services - blogging, speaking, and networking. It is a massive time-consuming endeavor. When I leave on Friday, I always think to myself: “Hey, only two more days this week!”

Starting a company, as you already know, is THE hardest of all business challenges. The number of people who are brave enough to venture out on their own is very small. The number who can do it successfully without being independently wealthy is smaller still. You have to want to succeed. The passion and - the so-called fire in the belly - go hand-in-hand with expertise and contacts. The hardest thing I tell people is knowing when to push on and, conversely, when to quit. In my early days, I probably missed some “shoulda quit” moments!

Call me. I would love to learn more about your business. We are not buying today but you just never can tell what tomorrow will bring!

Hi John,

I appreciate your email. I am trying to do some networking to develop business for my company. I would appreciate any referrals you can toss my way. Also, I read your article on winning new business overseas. I am open to trying that, but not quite sure where to start. How would you suggest making contact with companies overseas?

I would appreciate any advice you can give me.

Monty
